We all have gotten used to privacy in the internet being a figment of the users imagination. However, when I spoke with Dr. Gates (Communication Law Professor at Appalachian State University), it changed the way I look at the internet. The idea that advertisers can track us based off our mouse clicks is still scary at best, but what I was also interested in was his take on copyright issues. Being a Late Night Producer who uses clips from YouTube videos, I am always cautious as to what I can use versus what I cannot. I'm also concerned as to the privacy of the "YouTubers" that become famous because of their entertaining videos. Dr. Gates informed me that because they made the video for the public eye they are classified as "famous" and therefore do not have as much right to privacy as normal citizens. However, it was interesting to see how safe harbor was measured against PEG channels when using copyrighted materials. Here is an episode from my show where we used such content. While the copyrighted materials are legally under protection due to commentating on there values, still, it poses the issue of whats technically free. So, after viewing this video (which I hope you enjoy), let me know your thoughts and decide whether this show is free or constricted.
